A restaurant throws moments at a student that no worksheet covers: nobody has come to the table, the order is wrong, the room is too loud, the card is declined, it is time to tip. These sixteen cards practice exactly those moments. Each card is a real situation with three responses; the answers live on a separate teacher key, so the cards work for independent reading without giving anything away. A printed Corner Cafe menu and a menu-math page turn ordering on a budget into practice with real prices, the tipping page works four bills with the ten-percent trick, and the ordering script card, with a point-to version for students who do not speak, gives every student the words. The same deck runs at three levels, from choosing a response, to explaining it, to running it at a real table on a community outing.

Questions from teachers

Who are these restaurant cards for?
Teachers, job coaches and SLPs working with teens and young adults in special education, life skills and transition programs, and the community-based instruction outings they run. The situations are real restaurant moments, written at a plain reading level without childish framing, for students from about 13 to 21.
Do the cards show the correct answer?
No. The cards carry the situation and three responses only; the expected choice and the why line live on a separate teacher key page. The choices are rotated so the right answer is not always A.
What is on the menu math page?
A printed Corner Cafe menu with fourteen priced items and eight problems: six ordering-on-a-budget questions (is there enough, how much is left or how much short), one about which mains fit after a dessert, and the cheapest full meal. Every answer is on the teacher key and is computed from the menu prices.
Does it work for a student who does not speak?
Yes. Card 15 says an order by AAC or by card counts as ordering for yourself, the point-to ordering card is a cut-out the student hands to the server, and the first IEP goal is written for a spoken or AAC script.
How is tipping taught?
With the ten-percent trick: move the decimal one place left, add half of that for 15 percent or double it for 20, then round up to an easy number, on the food price before tax. Four bills are worked on the page, a short table says who gets a tip and who does not, and three lines say how to leave one in cash, on a card slip or on a payment screen.
