'What are you thankful for?' is the November question in every classroom, and it is a hard one to answer without words. This interactive book gives each answer a picture: turkey, my family, my friends, my dog, my home, my school, my teacher, pie. The child reads the cue line, finds the card, and completes the sentence.

The whole book reads 'I am thankful for', and the pages pair the classic Thanksgiving pictures with the people and places a child actually names. Teachers use it for the class thankful tree, speech therapists use it as an expressive language warm-up, and families read it around the table while dinner is still in the oven.

It prints in landscape with the answer cards on a longer last page and a plain-language assembly page. A pumpkin, corn, a leaf, a scarecrow, and an acorn are in the picture library if you want a harvest page or two.

When to use this book

The weeks before Thanksgiving, the class thankful tree, expressive language sessions, and a family read at the table.

How to customize this book

  • Add a page with your child's own photo: a pet, a grandparent, a favorite toy.
  • Read the cue line aloud, then wait; let the child find the card before you name it.
  • Swap in the pumpkin, corn, or leaf from the picture library for a harvest page.
  • Cut the cards apart and use them as the leaves on a thankful tree display.

Frequently asked questions

What does each page say?
A short cue line at the top ('They love me.'), one big picture, an empty box, and the sentence 'I am thankful for ___.' The child places the matching card in the box, so the page reads 'I am thankful for my family'.
Why does every sentence start with 'I am thankful for'?
The maker's custom starter puts any phrase at the front of every page. That phrase is what a thankful tree, a Thanksgiving circle, and a speech session all ask for, so the book answers the November question in the child's own words.
Which things are in the book?
Turkey, my family, my friends, my dog, my home, my school, my teacher, and pie. Every page can be swapped in the maker, including for your own photos.
Can a child who does not talk use it?
Yes. Placing the card is the answer. Many families read the sentence aloud and tap each word while the child matches, and an AAC user can say the sentence on their device as the card goes in.
