- What is an adapted book?
- An adapted book is a printable book changed so a child who cannot yet read independently can still take part. Each page pairs a picture with a short predictable sentence, and the child completes the page by moving a picture card into a box. Special education teachers, speech therapists, and parents use them to build language, matching, and attending skills.
- How do I assemble the book after printing?
- The classic build is to laminate every page and card, put soft velcro in the page boxes and rough velcro on the card backs, then bind the pages on the left. No laminator? Slide the pages into sheet protectors in a 3-ring binder. No velcro? Print once and let your child glue each card in its box, or skip the cards and have them point to the answer. The book includes a full assembly page.
- Is this adapted book maker free?

- Why does my printed book need to be at 100 percent size?
- The picture cards and the boxes on the pages share one exact size, so every card fits every box. If your printer scales the pages, the cards will not fit. The card page prints with a square that should measure exactly 1 inch; if it does not, reprint with scaling off or at 100 percent.
- Can AAC users read these books?
- Yes. Adapted books pair naturally with AAC: your child can answer on their device while you tap each word of the sentence as you read together. The predictable sentence starters, like I want and I see, mirror the phrases many AAC users practice every day.
- Which direction do the picture cards move?
- Both directions work, and the book never needs resetting. Start with the cards on the choice page and match them to the story pages while you read, or start with the cards on the pages and have your child match them back to the words. The second way is harder, so many families grow into it.
