How To Practice At Home

Five minutes, most days. Pick the one type your child is working on and say each word together first, so your child hears a clear model before trying it. Then move the word into a short phrase, like "a star in the dark," and when that feels easy, let your child build their own sentence around it. That word-phrase-sentence ladder is how speech practice usually climbs, and it works for every vocalic type.

Keep it light. Sound practice works best in games, in the car, and at snack time, not as a drill at a desk. For a child who likes to see progress, tally correct tries on a sheet from the free data sheet maker, which prints a simple tracker your SLP can read at the next session. And when your child would rather trace than talk first, the practice sheets above double as handwriting pages built from the same words.

Common Questions

Are these vocalic R word lists free?
Yes. Every list and practice sheet on this page is free to print, with no account.
What is vocalic R?
Vocalic R is the R that follows a vowel and blends with it, so the vowel and the R are said as one sound: AR in car, ER in bird, OR in door, AIR in chair, EAR in deer and IRE in fire. It is also called post-vocalic R. The R at the start of a word, as in red, is called prevocalic R and has its own lists on the R words page.
Why are there six types of vocalic R?
Because the vowel before the R changes how the tongue gets there. A child can say a clear ER and still miss AR or IRE, so speech-language pathologists usually practice one type at a time, which is why this page lists them separately.
What are final R words?
Words that end in an R sound, like car, door, chair and fire. Every final R is a vocalic R, so the Final group under each type above is a ready list of final R words.
At what age should a child say R?
R is one of the later sounds. In the US studies reviewed by Crowe and McLeod (2020), the ages ASHA uses, children reached 90 percent accuracy on R at about five and a half on average, and in some studies not until eight. Those studies do not give a separate age for vocalic R. If R keeps your child from being understood, ask a speech-language pathologist for an evaluation.
Which vocalic R should we practice first?
Follow the SLP's plan, because the best starting type depends on which ones your child already says. Without one, start with the type your child gets right most often and build from there.
Is there a printable pack for the Vocalic R sound?
Yes. The Vocalic R Sound Pack collects every practice level: picture pages, word lists by position, drill sheets, phrases, sentences, the cue card, a weekly tracker, and the therapist data sheet, with every sheet in full color and ink-saver black and white. The two sheets above stay free either way.
