When to use the yes and no cards
Use them for choices and simple questions all day: "Do you want juice?", "Is it time to go?", "Are you hurt?". Yes and no cards let your child answer without words, and they let you check that you understood a request before you act on it.
How to teach the yes and no cards
- Start with questions where you already know the answer, such as holding up a favorite snack and asking "Do you want this?".
- Point to the yes card and give the snack when your child touches it, saying "yes" as you do.
- Teach no with something your child clearly does not want, then take it away the moment they touch the no card.
- Once both are reliable, mix them into real questions through the day and always respect a no where you can.
Printable picture cards, sentence strips, and a communication book to start and grow picture exchange.

Frequently asked questions
- Should I teach yes or no first?
- Teach whichever your child already shows you with their body. Many children refuse clearly long before they agree, so no often comes first.
- Why thumbs up and thumbs down?
- They are easy to tell apart at a glance and match the gesture many children already see every day. You can switch to a different picture in the free maker.
- Can I print only the yes card or only the no card?
- Yes. Open the cards in the free maker, remove the one you do not need, and print a full sheet of the other.
- Are these cards free?
- Yes. Download the PDF free with no email, in 2 or 3 inch cards on US Letter or A4.
