Cut out these cards

The I need sentence strip gives a student a way to build a request in class, not just point at one card. They start with the fixed I need opener, then add a card like a break, the bathroom, or help to finish the request and hand you the whole strip. Building the sentence is the step students take once single cards are reliable.
This template prints in two parts. The blank version is a reusable strip base: the boxless I need starter followed by empty slots and a label frame, ready to laminate and keep. The with symbols version adds a matching tray of classroom cards cut to the slot size, so every card a student picks drops neatly onto the strip.
Keep the strip where the student can reach it, and model a full request a few times a day. Say the sentence out loud as you build it, hand it back, and respond right away when the student builds their own. The strip stays useful across the whole day because the tray carries the classroom cards they reach for most.
When to use this template
Best once a student uses single classroom cards and you want to grow full requests, or any time a student needs a calm, reliable way to ask for a break or the bathroom during class.
How to customize this template
- Swap a symbol for a photo of the real spot in your room, like your break corner or the class water station.
- Keep the words your students already hear, whether that is bathroom or restroom, break or rest.
- Add the one or two cards a student reaches for most to the front of the tray, so the request is quick to build.
Frequently asked questions
- What is an I need sentence strip?
- It is a strip that holds a fixed I need starter next to a blank slot. A student adds a classroom card, like a break or the bathroom, to finish the request, then hands you the whole strip so you can read the need at a glance.
- What cards come in the tray?
- The tray carries the classroom request set: help, break, bathroom, drink, all done, more, my turn, a question, wait, stop, yes, and no. Print the tray as is, or open it in the free editor to add the cards a student needs most.
- What is the difference between the blank and with symbols versions?
- The blank version is the reusable strip base you laminate and keep: the I need starter, empty slots, and a label frame. The with symbols version adds the matching tray of classroom cards to cut out and drop onto the slots.
- How is this different from the classroom cards?
- Single classroom cards let a student hand over one request at a time. The sentence strip pairs the I need starter with a card so the student builds a fuller request, which is usually the step teachers take once single cards are reliable.
- Is this sentence strip free to print?
- Yes. Download both the blank base and the with symbols version with no email required, or open the strip in the free editor to change the starter, set the number of slots, and swap in your own photos before you print.
