When to use the play card
Use it after a work task, at the end of a routine, and whenever your child wants a toy that is out of reach. Play is often the reward that makes other cards worth learning, so it fits well on a first-then board as the "then".
How to teach the play card
- Put a favorite toy where your child can see it but not reach it, such as a clear tub on a shelf.
- When your child reaches for it, guide them to hand you the play card.
- Give the toy straight away and say "play" as you do.
- Once the card is reliable, use it on a first-then board: first the task, then play.
PECS Communication Cards
