When to use this board
Put this board in the calm corner and teach it while the student is regulated, not in the middle of a hard moment. It only earns its keep if the child has practiced it when calm, and if every option printed on it is one the adult will honor.
Offering a controlled choice is one of the oldest antecedent strategies in behavior support, and it works because it hands back some control without handing over the whole decision. Six options suit a student who can scan a full array, so drop to four when the scanning itself is the hard part.
Keep every option genuinely available. A board that offers a walk when nobody can leave the room teaches the student that the board lies, and it quietly stops working after that.
Teachers often laminate one copy for the calm corner and send an identical copy home. The same six pictures meaning the same six things in both settings is worth more than a prettier board in only one of them.
