Which Letters Should A Child Learn First?

How Much Support Should The Sheet Give?

There are four levels here and the sheet can walk through all of them on one page. A solid gray letter to trace directly over is the beginner form and the strongest one: the child's pencil follows the actual shape rather than traveling around an outline.

The next level shows the letter in the trace style you chose, a darker letter to trace over or a hollow outline to trace inside. After that comes a single worked example at the start of an otherwise empty ruled line, which is the step handwriting programs use to fade the model: trace it once, then produce it unaided along the same line.

The last level is a blank line. If a child is copying accurately but cannot produce the letter without a model, they are not finished with the level above.

Three quarters of an inch is the kindergarten standard in both D'Nealian and Zaner-Bloser. First and second grade come down to half an inch, third grade to three eighths.

The three-line ruling here is the conventional one: a top line, a dashed midline and a baseline. The dashed midline is what tells a child how tall a lowercase letter should be, which is why letters like a and e sit at half height while l and t reach the top.

If a child keeps floating above or dropping below the line, try the option that thickens the baseline. Making the landing point obvious solves it more often than more practice does.
