What Letter Size Should A Name Tracing Worksheet Use?

The two handwriting programs that set the convention in US schools agree on kindergarten: three quarters of an inch. D'Nealian and Zaner-Bloser both specify it. By first and second grade the letters come down to half an inch, and by third grade to three eighths.

This tool offers those sizes by the grade they belong to, plus a one inch option for children working on pre-writing control or with a motor impairment, where no grade-level chart really applies.

Size and support are separate on purpose. A teenager still learning to write their name needs full tracing support at small, age-respectful letters. Tie the two together, as most generators do, and you can only serve one of those children.

Should A Child's Name Be In Capitals?

The default here is Emma, not EMMA, and that is a deliberate choice. Teachers regularly report children arriving in kindergarten writing their whole name in capitals because that is how they first learned it, and unlearning it takes longer than learning it did.

A capital for the first letter and lowercase for the rest is what the child will be asked for on every piece of school work afterward. If you do want all capitals, type the name that way and the sheet follows you.

Names With Accents, Hyphens And Apostrophes

Jose, Zoe and Mary-Kate print correctly, accents and all, because the typeface used for the letters covers extended Latin. Apostrophes in names like O'Brien work too.

Getting a child's name right on their own worksheet is not a small thing, and a lot of generators quietly drop the accent or replace it with a box. Scripts outside the Latin alphabet are the known limit: those are not covered yet.

Why The Letters Look The Way They Do

The letters are set in a typeface designed for literacy teaching: clear, upright letterforms with a single-story a and g, matching what a child is taught to write by hand. A worksheet set in a typeface with a two-story a is asking the child to copy something they will then be told is wrong.

The model prints in a light gray by default, and every ink color you can choose is dark enough to survive a school photocopier. There is no free color picker: an unbounded one lets a class set print in a pale color that fades on exactly the sheet where a child needs to see the line they are following.

Name Writing As An IEP Goal
