Frequently asked questions
- How do you take data on an AAC session?
- Score the student's own activation, at the prompt level it took. Hand over hand is not a scored response and the plan says so, because counting it makes a device look successful while the student is still being moved through it.
- Why does the plan start with modeling and ask for nothing?
- Aided language input means the student sees the board used before being asked to use it. Four modeled combinations with no demand is the warm up, and it is why the first scored opportunity is not the first thing that happens.
- How long should I wait before prompting an AAC user?
- Five seconds, and it feels much longer than it is. Motor planning on a board takes time, so the plan prints the wait as a step rather than leaving it to instinct, then moves from an expectant pause to a point to a partner model.
- Does this work with a device instead of a paper board?
- Yes. The targets are two symbol combinations, not a specific system, so a laminated core board, a fringe page, and a speech generating device all score the same way. The Core Board Maker builds a matching board if the student does not have one yet.
