What should a kindergarten math lesson plan cover?

One skill, taught with objects students can pick up, in blocks short enough to outlast a five year old's attention. This plan runs thirty minutes as five blocks of three to nine minutes, with a movement break built into the middle rather than added when the room falls apart.

Do I say fewer or less with kindergarten students?

Fewer is the accurate word for things you can count, and less belongs to amounts you measure, like water or sand. Kindergarten will say less anyway, and correcting it mid-lesson costs more than it teaches. Model fewer every time you speak and accept either answer from the students.

My students can count to ten but still get more and fewer wrong. Why?

Counting a group and comparing two groups are different skills, and the second one rests on knowing that the last number counted tells how many. Until that clicks, students answer by looking at which pile takes up more space. Keep the pairs close in size, four against five, so looking stops working and counting has to start.

How is this different from the count and match lesson on this site?

The count and match plan teaches counting a set of up to ten and finding its numeral card, so counting is the skill being learned. This plan takes counting as the starting point and works comparison on top of it.
