Today’s objective: Readers stop at a word that did not sound right, reread the sentence, and fix it from the letters rather than the picture.

The level field is free text on purpose. Fountas and Pinnell letters, DRA numbers and Lexile measures all fit, because the levelling system is your district’s choice and not ours.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I score a running record if I have never taken one?
- Count the words in the text, then mark an error each time a reader says something other than the word on the page. Errors divided into running words gives you accuracy, and anything at 90 percent or better means the text is a good fit. Self-corrections do not count as errors, which is why they get their own column.
- What if the readers in my intervention group are not all at the same level?
- A Tier 2 group holds together because the readers share a skill gap, not a level, so the decodable text is picked for the pattern they all need rather than for the strongest reader. The plan carries a band column and three lanes, so the same text can be started together with one reader and handed straight over to another. When a reader fixes every word alone for two sessions running, that is the signal to move them rather than to change the text.
- How many readers should be in a reading intervention group?
- Four is the number this plan is built around, and the record grid takes up to six. Past six you stop hearing individual reading, which is the reason for sitting at the table in the first place. Below three the readers lose the models they get from each other, so the plan holds from two up.
- What do the other students do while I run the intervention group?
- The plan gives you a section for it with a line for the covering adult beside each activity, because an intervention group comes apart the moment you have to look up. Keep those tasks to things the class has already done without an adult standing there, such as partner reading or a sound sort. Writing down who covers what is what makes the twenty minutes actually protected.
